Jamie XX’s remix of “Rolling In The Deep” by the enchanting Adele. First of all, I love his consistency with using mallet-esque sounds in his work. What’s also impressive is his fearlessness with his arrangement of this song. He withholds the best vocal hook until the middle of the song, flaunting his ability to keep energy in a song while staying fairly minimalist. He kills it when the chorus comes in and suddenly the vocals are treated down an octave. Jamie knows what to mess with and what to leave alone. To put it somewhat obnoxiously: Remaining admirably unconventional whilst preserving the marrow of a song.
If you listen to other remixes of this song, you’re most likely to hear quite in-your-face renditions that, sure, match Adele’s strong voice with busy or loud beats and overused club-y synth bass, but can become monotonously aggressive. I only say this because it seems quite formulaic: 1. Speed up song; 2. Add go-to synthesized bass riff; 3. Follow original structure of song closely; 4. Pad with occasional showy cut-and-mix vocal clips and an uninspired added melody. You might really like the MegaMix remix or Keljet’s, but I just plainly don’t feel like it’s putting anything new on the table for this song. - “No feeling to it, bro.”
So thank you Jamie XX for never compromising your individual sound and technique.
